![]() ![]() They whipped out some deep references in this film, and Cage seemed to take joy in lampooning his own performances. With Nicolas Cage, what is the commentary going to be? For a Nicolas Cage super fan like me, this movie was a joy to watch. It worked, for he is back in big productions again and even won an Oscar. Michael Keaton also did this in Birdman, taking a swipe at his most famous character in an attempt to rid himself of his past and take on a new persona for his future. If not for the heartfelt scene where Van Damme laid everything out and gave insight into his motivations, we understand just how difficult such self reflection can be. In the past, we saw Jean-Claude Van Damme do it with JCVD, which caused a bit of an eruption because it was a film about him, but the film was openly mocking him. It's always brilliant to see just how far someone will take their art and even lampoon themselves in the process. Needless to say, this was the role Cage was meant to play.that being himself. The summation of this bizarre trajectory comes to a peak in this role. People rightfully gave him credit for giving it his all even for the straight to video fare he did because he had a couple weeks off between other projects. And then the revolution on social media of commenting on terrible films and appreciating there awfulness became a trend, and people started noticing that even Cage's "bad" films exuded a certain energy. The only thing that seemed to be consistent was every few films, we get a pretty good performance. Questionable choices on top of questionable choices. Money was tight, he had terrible spending habits and had to keep the bread baking. The former Oscar winner seemed to be back on top, making the National Treasure movies and seemingly on his way to movie star status. Black Knight is a deeply flawed hero whose abilities are steeped in darkness, making him the perfect gateway for the movies to embrace the same darkness the Avengers faced in the comics.Over the course of the last decade, Nicolas Cage's career has taken a weird turn. As challenging as the MCU's villains have proved, all have eventually been beaten, so it would be fascinating to see the MCU take the same route as the comics, with Earth's Mightiest Heroes forced to surrender an entire nation to a villain they can't beat. Given that Bloodwraith's attack comes between Ultron devastating a nation and before the 'Kang Dynasty' comic arc, the MCU is actually right on track to introduce him at a comic-accurate period in the Avengers' career.īlack Knight doesn't have the most memorable villains as a whole, but the Bloodwraith was a threat even the Avengers couldn't stop, and is perfect movie fodder for Dane Whitman. Bloodwraith may not be among the Avengers' signature foes, but he is one of their rare permanent losses, as Ultron's actions created a towering specter who essentially made an entire country too deadly to enter. The Avengers have gradually built up a proven track record with the public in their defeats of insurmountable threats, whether it be Thanos, Kang the Conqueror, or Doctor Doom. The Bloodwraith and his menace are not only a physical hazard to the Avengers themselves, but the team's esteemed reputation. ![]()
